The Peggy and Jack Baskin Foundation is deeply concerned about the spread of the coronavirus. COVID-19 is disproportionately impacting communities that are already experiencing economic insecurity, discrimination, and instability. We also understand that the COVID-19 outbreak is impacting nonprofits in many ways, including increased demand for services, lost revenue due to closures and cancellations, and other challenges.

In order to assist in supporting nonprofits during this time, we have compiled a list of resources from a variety of organizations, including the Community Foundation for Monterey County, the Community Foundation of Santa Cruz County and the San Francisco Foundation, for nonprofits that have been, or will be, affected by the COVID-19 outbreak.

  • The Crisis Planning Checklist presents key steps that organizations can review to ensure that they are prepared for crisis response and operational continuity. In addition, the Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery Plan Template provides the outline for a thorough and highly detailed action plan that can be used to respond to low, marginal, and critical disasters.
  • California Consortium for Urban Indian Health’s COVID-19 webpage, which includes culturally-specific considerations for Indigenous communities.
  • The article “Nonprofit guide to COVID planning” outlines what major considerations nonprofits should be ready to address, such as employee care and financial planning, and offers suggestions for how to respond to them.
  • This article on fundraising events and public health provides a roadmap for nonprofits that are deciding whether or not to move forward with planned events.
  • This technical guide published on TechSoup describes numerous ways that nonprofit employees can effectively conduct remote work, which has become widespread due to the current recommendations for coronavirus prevention.
  • The California Department of Employment Development (EDD) has programs to provide financial assistance to workers who have lost employment, are experiencing illness, or are caring for a sick family member. The Governor’s Executive Order waived the one week waiting period. Learn more and submit a claim for lost wages. En Español
  • The California Labor and Workforce Development Agency has information on employee benefits, such as paid sick leave, employer assistance, etc.
  • On March 17, Governor Newsom issued an executive order that “authorizes local governments to halt evictions for renters and homeowners, slows foreclosures, and protects against utility shutoffs for Californians affected by COVID-19.” The following cities have passed moratoriums on evictions: Los Angeles, San Jose, San Francisco, Santa Monica, and Alameda County.
  • This article published on Medium presents tips and suggestions on how to navigate communications about the current COVID-19 pandemic in an inclusive and unbiased way to combat increasing xenophobia and discrimination.
  • The article “COVID-19 Resources: How to Reach Your Donors and Volunteers” offers recommendations for ways organizations can continue to build and strengthen relationships with those in their networks without in person events and/or meetings.

  • The National Network to End Domestic Violence has compiled a document of tips for individuals who would like to help a friend or loved one currently in an abusive relationship during COVID-19.

  • Ventura County is releasing videos with information on the spread of coronavirus in indigenous Mexican languages through their Farmworker Resource Program.

  • UndocuFund provides disaster relief donations to undocumented immigrants in Sonoma County; instructions on how to apply in both English and Spanish can be found here.
  • Information on the state’s response to the virus, and a list of free and low-cost immigration services providers, can be found in the COVID-19 Guide for Immigrant Californians. Translation is available on the website. 

  • Freedom for Immigrants has created a new section of their interactive map that tracks reports of COVID-19 in detention centers and ICE’s responses nationally.
  • This interactive map can help families and individuals conveniently locate DACA renewal clinics near them once restrictions are lifted. En Español.

Here are some local emergency response funds that are offering assistance to non-profits at this time:

  • The Silicon Valley Community Foundation and San Francisco Foundation have partnered to create a COVID-19 Coronavirus Regional Response Fund, which “will support lead organizations representing each of the ten Bay Area counties and their immediate efforts in addressing COVID-19 related challenges in their respective counties.”
  • The Community Foundation of Santa Cruz County currently has a COVID-19 Local Response Fund that will deploy “disaster-related grant funds to local community-based organizations at the frontlines of the coronavirus outbreak in Santa Cruz County.”
  • The Community Foundation for Monterey County and the Monterey Peninsula Foundation have spearheaded a COVID-19 Relief Fund “to help those affected by the impact of the coronavirus in Monterey County.”
  • United Way California has developed a statewide COVID-19 Relief Fund, which will supplement relief funds sponsored by local United Ways to “relieve hardship for vulnerable working families (due to quarantine or disruption of income), support the coordination of community relief efforts, and ensure equity in the distribution of philanthropic resources across all of California.” This fund will also provide support to individuals assistance with bills, rent, and food; please call 1-866-211-9966 and provide your zip code. They will provide individuals with a list of local agencies that can provide direct assistance.
  • The East Bay Community Foundation’s COVID-19: A Just East Bay Response Fund “will rapidly deploy resources to organizations addressing the economic impact of the broader COVID-19 outbreak” throughout the East Bay.
  • For grantee partners of the Women’s Foundation of California, the Community Power Fund will offer rapid response funding to “help off-set costs incurred to maintain operations or adapt to health and financial impacts caused by COVID-19.”
  • The Latino Community Foundation has established the Love Not Fear Fund to “support Latino-led organizations that provide wrap around services to the most vulnerable, especially undocumented seniors living in the Inland Empire and Central Valley and families that have already lost wages.”
  • The San Francisco Foundation also has a rapid-response fund that is awarding grants to nonprofits work with communities that are being targeted for harassment due to the spread of coronavirus, such as Asian American communities. Although COVID-19 is not a disease that is specific to any racial or ethnic community, racism and discrimination against these communities have increased due to its spread.
  • The National Center for Family Philanthropy has created an interactive map of COVID-19 relief funds across the United States.
